This selective medium is used for the detection of Coliforms on surfaces. Gram positive micro-organisms are clearly inhibited by the bile salts and the crystal violet it contains. The colonies of bacteria which ferment lactose are pink in colour, their size depending on the number of bacteria which exist on the surface of the medium.
